Welwyn Garden City’s preparations for the end-of-season play-offs suffered a setback as they fell to only a third defeat of the season.

The newly-crowned Saracens Hertfordshire Cricket League Premier Division champions will face Radlett on Saturday in the semi-final, the side they beat last year to claim the play-off crown.

But they couldn’t go into the game on a winning note as they lost by three wickets at Harpenden.

City were put into bat and made 151 in their innings.

Daniel Blacktopp top scored with 33, one of six to reach double figures.

But it was the inability to go on and make a big score that proved their downfall.

The reply got off to a great start when home captain and dangerman Ben Frazer was removed with the score on 13.

And WGC kept all bar two Harpenden batsman in single figures.

But unfortunately they couldn’t snare Gregg Cooper and his 76 not out guided Harpenden home with nine overs to spare.
