LEWIS Hamilton is on course for a podium finish in today's Spanish Grand Prix.

The McLaren marvel has climbed two places from fifth on the grid to third in an eventful race at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona.

The 23-year-old from Tewin is trailing the Ferrari's of world champion Kimi Räikkönen and Felipe Massa with 40 laps to go after a second safety car period.

The safety car was deployed on the first lap to clear up debris following a crash at the back of the field.

More worryingly for Hamilton, his McLaren team-mate Heikki Kovalainen has just crashed into the tyre wall at high speed and been stretchered away to the medical centre.
