LEWIS Hamilton was faster than the legendary Michael Schumacher in Barcelona yesterday.

The 23-year-old Formula One ace from Tewin was quickest on day one of testing at the Circuit de Catalunya.

And that meant the McLaren Mercedes maestro was ahead of Schumacher in the timesheets.

The former world champion got back behind the wheel for Ferrari on an overcast day in Spain.

However, Herts star Hamilton shone as the final pre-season test kicked off on a damp track in Barcelona.

Hamilton completed 78 laps and 365km during the day.

His quickest unofficial lap time of 1 minute 22.276 seconds was fractionally faster than Ferrari's reigning world champion Kimi Raikkonen.

Schumacher, who is a Ferrari advisor, showed he's lost none of his old skill with the third fastest lap time of the day.

Hamilton's new McLaren colleague Heikki Kovalainen was fifth.

With rain falling during night, the test kicked off on a wet track in Barcelona yesterday morning.

However, McLaren work for the morning was scheduled to be focused around practising pit stop procedures for the race team, as it will be for the rest of the week. In the afternoon on a drying track the team carried out final evaluations on new components and fine tune set-ups for the start of the season.

Hamilton was F1 World Championship runner-up in his rookie season.

The first race of the 2008 campaign is in Melbourne, Australia, on March 16.
