FORMULA One racer Lewis Hamilton is officially a great Briton!

The motor racing superstar from Herts was a winner at the 2007 Morgan Stanley Great Britons Awards last Thursday.

The brilliant young Brit, just 23, won the sports category after capturing the nation's hearts during his rookie F1 season.

He beat boxer Ricky Hatton and sailor Robin Knox-Johnston to the accolade.

Hamilton came agonisingly close to winning the world title in his first year behind the wheel for McLaren and was praised by judges for his "impeccable composure" and being an "inspirational role model for young people".

His father and manager, Anthony Hamilton, from Tewin, collected the trophy at London Guildhall on Lewis's behalf as the McLaren driver was in Barcelona, Spain, ready for testing the following morning.

The Great Britons Awards are designed to celebrate what is best about Britain over the past year, as voted for by the public.

Other winners on the night were Harry Potter author JK Rowling and former prime minister Baroness Margaret Thatcher, who received a lifetime achievement award.
