LEWIS Hamilton's Monaco Grand Prix victory hopes suffered a setback after hitting one of the street circuit's crash barriers.
Having climbed into second place off the grid after a fast getaway to overtake Ferrari rival Kimi Raikkonen, the 23-year-old Herts hero made a costly driving error.
He clipped one of the Monte Carlo circuit's walls on lap six in the rain on the slippery track.
A rear puncture resulted in the McLaren driver having to make an earlier than expected first pit-stop.
He rejoined the race down in fifth place after a change of tyres and taking on a lot of extra fuel.
The safety car later came out following another accident on the wet track.
Hamilton climbed back up to fourth when former team-mate Fernando Alonso also hit a barrier and was forced to stop for new tyres.
Hamilton gained another place back when Raikkonen was forced to come into the pits for a drive-through penalty.
At the front of the field, Ferrari's Felipe Massa lost first place to BMW's Robert Kubica after spinning off.
With 17 laps gone, Hamilton lies third 10 seconds behind Kubica and Massa.
