SUNDAY'S success in Melbourne was the best possible start for World Championship contender Lewis Hamilton.

After the agony of seeing the world title slip from his grasp in his rookie season over the final two races, Hamilton opened the 2008 campaign with his fifth grand prix victory.

It was a masterful drive by the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes man after securing pole position in qualifying on Saturday.

Hamilton, 23, said: "We have done a superb job all weekend and we really just have to keep our cool.

"We had a great car and I am very happy with a great start to the season."

Hamilton feels he's in perfect shape to challenge for the title again.

He thinks he's got a superior machine to drive and knows he's better prepared than in his first season with McLaren.

"I am probably twice as fit this year compared to last year," said the now Swiss-based Hamilton, whose family still live in Tewin.

"But also the car was really fantastic to drive and it was quite easy to drive."

Rather ominously, he added: "If I needed to have pushed more I could, but I was quite happy and quite comfortable driving at the pace I was at.

"I was keeping in touch with the team and they were telling me I had half-a-second compared to everyone else. I just kept it that way."

The second grand prix of the season takes place in the heat and humidity of Malaysia over the Easter weekend.
