LEWIS Hamilton's hopes of pulling off a sensational Italian Grand Prix victory at Monza have been dashed.

Hamilton had climbed into second place at a wet track through a combination of superb driving and good fortune.

The 23-year-old McLaren driver from Herts was on a one-stop strategy and had fuelled to the end of the race on wet tyres.

However, he had to come in to switch from extreme wets to intermediates on lap 35.

That dropped him back down to seventh behind Ferrari's Felipe Massa, his main title rival.

Toro Rosso's Sebastian Vettel still leads the race.
