HERTS Phoenix athlete Mary Gough finished runner up in the pre-junior girls' race at the 2008 Herts Schools' Cross-Country Championships.

The Presdales pupil was just five seconds behind the winner with a time of 8 minutes 22 seconds for the race around Verulamium Park in St Albans.

Stanborough schoolgirl Laura Coffey completed the course in a second over nine minutes for 10th place. Four Dame Alice Owen's pupils - Lucy Ham, Eleanor Bullock, Emily Ferber and Rachel Elwood - all crossed the line outside of the top 15.

Top Times Territory finisher in the junior boys' race was Herts Phoenix member Liam Cloona, who came ninth with a time of 7 mins 53 secs.

Cameron Laleye and Rory Mudd, of Dame Alice Owen's, came home in 14th and 18th respectively. Cameron clocked 8 mins 12 secs, with Rory four seconds behind.
