INSPIRED riding during the Welwyn Track League at Gosling last Friday demonstrated that Team Welwyn junior Tom Gosbee is back to his sparkling best after his early season injury scare.

Riding in the A Group, Gosbee showed well in a block pursuit in which super sprinter George Olive, of VC St Raphael, made the classic error of easing up before the line.

That allowed Gosbee to shoot past to take second spot behind John McClelland.

Consistently high speeds in the final event of the programme, coupled with some attacking riding by Gosbee's team-mates Simon Layfield, Phil Lisher and Joe Magnus, set up the perfect finish.

However, in the back straight Gosbee looked to be boxed in and struggling to find a way through as a late breakaway group was caught.

Coming into the final straight, Gosbee found the way clear and blasted through to challenge George Olive strongly for the win.

His effort came just too late as he finished about half a wheel down in second place.

Youth rider Joe Magnus is still finding his feet in the senior track league though, after winning the youth version in 2007.

He impressed on Friday with some attacking riding and took second place in the Group B points race.

Magnus hopes to move into Group A shortly.
