TOM Lewis collected the Silver Medal at the Australian Open for ending the event as the highest placed amateur.

The 19-year-old from Welwyn Garden City finished the competition in a superb tied 12th position in a field of more than 150 players and ahead of such famous names as Greg Norman, Jon Daly and Fred Couples.

Lewis’ final round of 69 gave him an overall score of 7 under par at the Lakes Golf Club in Sydney.

He finished 12 strokes behind home winner Geoff Ogilvy.

Lewis had prepared for the event by coming close to pulling off a sensational victory over the professionals in the New South Wales Open only to lose out in a three-way play-off for the title.
