WGC men’s first team played out an unspectacular goalless draw with promotion rivals Hertford on Saturday.

Oli Reynolds’ disallowed second-half goal, having touched the ball in with his foot, was the closest either side came to breaking the deadlock.

Despite their two-game winless run, WGC are still in the mix at the top of the table, sitting in fourth and just three points off second-placed Hertford in the final promotion place.

The home side had a full squad available for the match and hoped to reverse the 4-1 defeat at the start of the season when the side was depleted.

The game began with both sides feeling each other out and attacking on the break without committing too many players forward.

WGC threatened the Hertford goal on a few occasions after nice play down the right from Mark Skilbeck and Bryn Evans but found keeper Max Capaldi in good form, blocking the way.

Hertford also caused some problems for WGC’s defence but Peter Mullens, Neil Kirby, James Lutrario and Stuart Stephens held firm and kept them at bay.

The away side did gain several penalty corners but the defence were out quickly and they came to nothing.

The second half began with WGC continuing to pressure Hertford all over the pitch and not allow them time to settle.

Jens Van Helden, Tom Godfrey and Dan Hatt provided great width and asked questions of the Hertford defence playing passes through for Evans and Reynolds to run onto.

More chances were created including one from a great break along the by-line by Skilbeck and he invitingly pulled the ball back to Rob Sansom who shot first time at goal but straight at the keeper.

At the other end, Hertford created chances to steal the lead.

Nick Downer twice brought fine saves from WGC keeper Dan Klinger via corner routines, firstly in the 45th minute, before causing the custodian more issues several minutes later.

In between Ben Van Rooyen shot wide of Klinger’s goal as the away side upped the ante.

Despite being handed five penalty corners in the second period, WGC almost made them pay for their inaccurate shooting.

Good overlap play saw the ball crossed into the area and following some pinball, the ball fell to Reynolds who nudged home. However, after several moments of discussion, the goal was disallowed.

Captain Klinger would like to give special mention to Hatt and Sansom who both flew in from San Francisco within hours of the match and both played well.

WGC travel to Harpenden in the league on Saturday.
