GCR'S Martha Hall and Mandy Livingstone took the top two places in the ladies' section of the Midweek Road Race League match.
The duo pushed each other along all the way at Royston.
Martha crossed the line first in 37 minutes 52 seconds with Mandy just six seconds behind her.
Despite the welcome return of Suzy Fitt in 11th, nothing could stop the St Albans onslaught.
Six of their competitors ended in the top 14 to give the Striders' A team victory with 56 points to GCR's 66 and a commanding lead in the table.
At least the results in the lady vets' category went GCR's way, to level the competition at the halfway stage.
Royston Runners' home fixture enjoys the most scenic location and the best road course in the league.
Sadly this year it was cursed with persistent rain, dark clouds and deep puddles all the way across the country lanes.
The long jog from the car park to the start was cold and dismal, and the changing facilities were shown up to be woefully inadequate.
Ironman triathletes Sam Smith and Lauren Stewart battled through the foul conditions as they cycled the 25 miles from WGC to the race venue at Therfield village, arriving seven minutes late for the start.
They put a brave face on things after eventually catching the backmarkers and working their way up through the field.
Following the post-race sandwiches and cakes, they mutually decided against the bike back home in the dark, and called out the friendly taxi-van.
