Home Counties Premier League Division One
Oxford 207-7 Welwyn Garden City 185-10
DIVISION newcomers WGC suffered their first league defeat of the season at home to table-toppers and reigning champions Oxford.
Martin James' promoted side slipped to a 22-run defeat at home to the unbeaten HCPL Division One pacesetters on Saturday.
Raj Sharma led the way for the visitors with 65 runs as they posted 207-7 off their 66 overs.
Ex-Middlesex man Aaron Laraman was the most successful bowler with 3-25.
It was then the turn of Rupert Evans to shatter WGC's hopes of a third Division One success this season.
The spin bowler took 6-61 to leave the home side all out for 185 and licking their wounds following their promotion last summer as HCPL Division Two (East) champions.
First City Care man of the match Ben Frazer top scored with 46 in reply and Dan Blacktopp also made 40.
However, their efforts weren't enough to bring Martin James' men their first home victory of the campaign.
It was in fact WGC's first league defeat since last July and followed a tense struggle at Digswell Park
Both sides have pretensions to be the 2008 champions and it was disappointing for WGC to concede a 20-point differential to Oxford when holding on for two more overs would have meant only a six point difference.
WGC face Radlett next Saturday.
