BEDFORDSHIRE county player John Kemp won the Nick Faldo Commemoration Jug at Welwyn Garden City for the second time.

Trailing a stroke after the first round and after a bogey start to his second round, Kemp hit top form to collect six birdies for a five under par 65 to win the coveted trophy.

Kemp, from John O' Gaunt, who won the title two years ago, had opened with 72 and his 65 gave him a three under par total of 137.

That ensured he won by four strokes in the 21st year of the tournament.

Mid Herts golfer Tom Shadbolt was runner-up after rounds of 71, 70.

Third came Kemp's club colleague Mark Wharton with 75, 68 and fourth was Birstall's Tom Dalby with 74, 69.

In the tournament for golf club champions to mark the 1987 Open Championship victory of the Mannicotts club's one-time champion Nick Faldo, only four players beat par, all in the afternoon.

Three players tied for the first round lead on 71 - Tom Shadbolt, Burhill's Tom Gamble and former Jug winner Ed Conduit from Elton Furze, who followed with 74.

After his bogey start to his second round, Kemp followed with three pars, then birdied 4, 5 and 8 and after the turn birdied 12, 13 and 16.

His round of 65 was two shots off the course record.

Nick Faldo's parents, George and Joyce, maintained their attendance at the event over the years and Mrs Faldo referred at the prizegiving to Nick's captaincy of the European Ryder Cup team next month.
