COMPETITION organisers were put under considerable pressure to cancel the first day's play at Hatfield House last Friday because of the Arctic weather.

A heavy snowstorm just two hours before the scheduled start of play in The Billy Ross-Skinner British Mixed Doubles Invitation Championship added to a considerable amount of snow on the ground and caused absolute chaos on the local roads.

Fortunately, the organisers kept their nerve and all Friday's competitors reached the court safely to enable the tournament to get under way more or less on time.

It proved worthwhile for Hatfield players with four reaching the quarter-finals - Colin Dean, Jonathan Fisher, Catherine Walker and late replacement Steve Brewerton.

And of those, Brewerton and Walker made it through to the final itself on Sunday with their respective partners.

Defending champion Karen Hird and Brewerton eventually won the title against Walker and Anthony Clake.
