JUNIOR tennis aces from Herts just failed to make home advantage count in the annual Lionel Cox Trophy event at Queenswood.

Teams from eight counties took part in the competition held at the Brookmans Park school's tennis centre.

Herts came up against squads from Essex, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Suffolk, Norfolk, Northants and Cambridgeshire in the popular junior competition which has been running now for many years.

They competed in three age groups - for 10U, 11U and 12U - with girls and boys representing the county in each section.

And the hosts were just pipped to top spot overall by neighbours Essex by the narrowest of margins following an exciting couple of days of tennis.

The Herts teams had a great atmosphere and positive vibe, and played some great tennis.

Welwyn hitter Harvey Shackleton was part of the boys' 10 and under team that finished first in their age group overall.

Also playing for Herts in the age group were Charlie Broom, Tom Hewitt and Toby Rogers.

Georgina Axon, also from Welwyn, was part of the girls' 10 and Under team that finished third in their section.

Brookmans Park ace Amy Thomson also played her part in the girls' U11 team securing third spot in their age group.

After adding up all the results from the three age groups, Herts finished the tournament only four points behind their Essex rivals.
