LEWIS Hamilton got off to a disastrous start in today's Bahrain Grand Prix.

The 23-year-old Herts driver got stuck on the grid at the Bahrain International Circuit in Sakhir.

Having qualified in third place on Saturday, the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes driver failed to get away when the green lights signalled for the race proper.

He had dropped down the field to tenth by the first corner as a stream of cars overtook him on the line.

The Tewin motor racer's poor start then saw him run into the back of former McLaren team-mate Fernando Alonso on lap two.

Hamilton's car climbed all over the back of Alonso's Renault as he tried to overtake him.

The front wing of Hamilton's car flew off and he was forced into an unscheduled pit stop to repair the damage.

Hamilton was down in 18th place on lap seven, 50 seconds behind race leader Felipe Massa.
