Four goals from Trinny McCann saw Welwyn Garden City Hockey Club to a convincing 6-1 win over Luton in the Premier Division of the 5 Counties Women's Hockey league.

It keeps Welwyn top of the table as the season heads to its conclusion.

They were on the attack from the start and were soon putting the Luton defence under pressure.

Shannon Tella’s speed on the right was put to good use as she chased a ball that had been given up by the defence and knocking it across it was swept into the top corner by Ellie Bonnett.

McCann got her first shortly after as she fired in from the top of the circle and she was involved in the third too with some excellent inter-passing between herself and Bonnett giving an unmarked Abbie Woodman the simple finish.

Luton did give themselves a glimmer of hope just before half-time when a mistimed tackle in midfield set a Luton player free to run into the circle.

Goalkeeper Erica Stovold made the initial save but the forward pounced on the rebound and forced the ball under her as she went down to block, and the ball trickled over the line as sweeper Charlotte Honour made a valiant attempt to stop it.

The second half though was all about McCann as she slotted in three more goals to take the game beyond Luton’s reach.

The first was a thunderous shot from the top of the circle giving the keeper no chance to react while the second was heading towards the net through a crowd of players from a Woodman flick before McCann made sure with the deflection.

Her third followed some good play from Harriet Anderson-Bradley, who played on despite a suspected broken toe, and Annabel Mabin moved WGC down the field with the final pass finding McCann with just the keeper to beat.

Luton had looked dangerous at times on the break but defenders Lisa Sheffield, Lizzie Owen, Holly Butrimas-Gair and Honour kept them at bay with some excellent tackling and interceptions.

Elsewhere two goals each for Danine Irwin and Jodie Sharkey helped the 2nds to a 4-2 win over Blueharts but the 3rds couldn’t match them, losing 3-1 to the Hitchin club, Lucy Owen getting their only goal.

The 4ths drew 2-2 with Berkhamstead & Hemel with both goals from Alisa Hassan.
