Fast-finishing Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton is closing the gap on favourite Rory McIlroy in the betting stakes ahead of the BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2014 on Sunday night.

The 29-year-old Mercedes driver from Hertfordshire continues to shorten for the BBC SPOTY award.

He is now priced at 15/8 with BoyleSports, having been initially priced up at 10/1 when the market was opened earlier in the year.

Despite Hamilton’s price rapidly shortening, one online punter from Northern Ireland has placed £10,000 on golf champion Rory McIlroy at 2/5 to bag the 2014 BBC SPOTY trophy.

McIlroy, who won both the 2014 Open Championship at Royal Liverpool and the 96th PGA Championship at Valhalla in Louisville, Kentucky, is still in pole position to claim the top prize.

BBC SPOTY 2014 Winner

The odds

Rory McIlroy 2/5

Lewis Hamilton 15/8

Gareth Bale 40/1

Jo Pavey 50/1

Charlotte Dujardin 150/1

Carl Froch 150/1

Lizzie Yarnold 250/1

Kelly Gallagher 300/1

Adam Peaty 300/1

Max Whitlock 400/1

Wales and Real Madrid footballer Gareth Bale can be backed at 40/1 to win the coveted award and is available at 10/1 in the betting without McIlroy market, with Hamilton heading the betting as the red-hot favourite at 1/14.

Liam Glynn, PR executive at BoyleSports said: “One punter from Northern Ireland certainly has faith in Rory McIlroy having placed £10k on the golfer at 2/5 to win the BBC SPOTY award.

“No doubt his finger nails will be fairly short come Sunday night as he waits in anticipation to see if he will make a £4,000 profit.”

He added: “Lewis Hamilton looks to be McIlroy’s only danger on Sunday night, as its then 40/1 the field.

“Hamilton has seen good support all year, having been as big as 10/1 prior to the start of the 2014 F1 season, but at present Rory McIlroy is by far our biggest loser.”

Also in the running for the award are Jo Pavey, Charlotte Dujardin, Carl Froch, Lizzie Yarnold, Kelly Gallagher, Adam Peaty and Max Whitlock.

Voting will take place during Sunday’s live programme from Glasgow.

* BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2014 can be seen on BBC One on Sunday night from 8pm.
