Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton was fastest on the penultimate day of pre-season testing in Spain.

For the second day running, the Mercedes AMG Petronas team topped the timesheets in Barcelona.

Hamilton completed a total of 76 laps today (Saturday), recording the quickest time of day three of the final winter test with 1m 23.022s.

Despite clocking the best lap of the day, it was a mixed bag for the 30-year-old F1 racer from Hertfordshire at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.

Hamilton said: “It wasn’t a particularly spectacular day.

“The track seems to have lost a bit of grip in the last few days so the feeling wasn’t as good.

“But I’m still glad we got some running done and I feel good in the car.”

With Hamilton at the wheel of the F1 W06 Hybrid, the Mercedes schedule today consisted of aero evaluation work in the morning, followed by set up analysis and performance tests in the afternoon.

Two-time world champion Hamilton emerged for his first run at 9.05am CET, completing 36 laps before lunch and a further 40 after the break.

Hamilton explained: “We were trying to understand a few things today with the set up and it gave us a clearer indication of that in the afternoon.

“The guys in the team have been exceptional during these tests and I just can’t wait to get racing now – the fun stuff!”

Hamilton’s Silver Arrows colleague Nico Rosberg is scheduled to take the wheel of the F1 W06 Hybrid tomorrow (Sunday) for the fourth and final day of the test.

Rosberg said after testing on Friday: “We’re confident that we have a good car and I’m starting to feel good in it.

“At the same time, of course, we’re well aware that the others have been posting some quick times and we can take nothing for granted.

“We have a great team who are doing a fantastic job and always want better and better, so we will keep our heads down and keep working. It’s a work in progress.”
