WGC'S Youth Under-9 side are in joyous mood after winning their age group section at the Gosling Summer Football Tournament at Monk's Walk School.
The 7-a-side team were placed in a group of five teams, and after the league games had been completed, they found themselves narrowly missing out on first place in their section by a goal difference of one.
The boys, however, still reached the knockout stage, being the second-best placed team out of the 15 sides in the competition.
They then met in the semi a strong St Albans City Youth side who had won their group.
WGC were victorious 1-0 with a goal from Aaron Foreman.
The youngsters then found themselves against London team Chettle Court Rangers in the final.
This was the side that had pipped them to first place in the group stages earlier in the event.
City were unlucky not to win the match in the dying seconds of normal time, when a free-kick crashed against the post and Harry Claridge was unfortunate not to convert the rebound.
Yet again there was little between the teams, and the final had to be decided on penalties.
Luckily WGC keeper Jack Hanson was up to the challenge, saving one penalty brilliantly down to his right-hand side.
Josh Ward then calmly slotted home the final spot-kick and WGC were crowned champions.
This marked a great day for the club with all the teams entered in the tournament playing some great football.
WGC are looking for new players next season at Under-10 level.
