Tring Athletic 3 Welwyn Garden City 0

INCOMING City manager Paul Tomkins watched on as his new side slipped to a 3-0 defeat away at Tring Athletic.

In what was always going to be a tricky game, the Herns Lane club's task was made all the more difficult after manager Dave Cooper and assistant Darren Gibb resigned the weekend before.

City stalwart Richard Teixeira assisted Tomkins on the bench for the game, with the side missing players due to suspension and prior commitments.

Speaking after the match, Tomkins said: "It was all about putting together a team today as a lot of players were unavailable.

"Under the circumstances I am very pleased, although there was a little bit of a lack of shape.

"But the first two goals were both well worked, with the third a defensive error, but I am confident for the rest of the season."

Tring opened the scoring in the sixth minute when Ty North finished off a flowing move to give the home side an early lead.

Athletic extended their lead only nine minutes later through Andy Humphreys as a patched up City side were outdone by the slick passing of the hosts.

The game was all but wrapped up five minutes before the interval when North got his second of the game due to a defensive error.

To their credit, the Herns Lane side regrouped at half-time and managed to restrict the home side to a couple of long-range efforts, but they didn't manage to get on the score sheet themselves.

Tomkins added: "We had much better shape in the second half, and in the last 15 or 20 minutes I think we deserved to score.

"I think it will take another week to get the team sorted, and some stability in the squad, but I will be bringing players in, so remain confident."

Tomkins has revealed that Gavin Kelsey will be his assistant manager.

Next up for the Citizens is a derby game against Hertford Town on Saturday.
