Herts Senior Challenge Cup Second Round
HOWARD Cowley saw his WGC side battle bravely as they lost to Blue Square South side Bishop’s Stortford at Woodside Park in the Herts Senior Challenge Cup on Tuesday.
The Citizens went down 5-2 in the end but provided a good account of themselves as they gave the Blues a scare in the county competition.
A cracking Dan Griggs first time effort from 30 yards flew into the top corner on 16 minutes to give the visitors a surprise lead.
Striker David Parkinson came within inches of doubling the advantage but after rounding the keeper he could only find the side-netting.
Stortford midfielder Loui Fazakerley equalised on 26 minutes as the two teams went in at the break level.
WGC had really impressed and certainly proved they were no pushovers.
A minute after the interval the home side went ahead through Greg Pearson, who had hit a hat-trick against Canvey Island the weekend before.
The South Midlands League players kept their heads up and managed to find a leveller of their own through Paul Killick.
Stortford then dug in and went back in front.
Pearson added his second putting Stortford 3-2 up.
Jack Midson and Tom Williamson both netted for the home side as they in the end ran out comfortable 5-2 winners.
Stortford will now entertain Broxbourne Borough V&E in the quarter final.
