THE Lady Citizens lost to Lewes Ladies in the semi-final of the South East Combination League Cup at Herns Way.

This was WGC's third match against Lewes in the past month and it was third time lucky for the East Sussex side following a 2-2 draw and a last-minute 2-1 defeat.

Lewes took the lead in the fourth minute when Charlotte Bennett slotted the ball past Verity Crook in the Welwyn goal.

Welwyn equalised in the 20th minute when Laveena Betts toe-poked the ball home after Trish Gower in the Lewes goal dropped a Dawn Mallet corner.

The second half was just as tight as the first, with Lewes' resilient no-nonsense defence proving too hard for Welwyn to break down.

With the scores level at full time, extra-time was necessary and in the fourth additional minute, Lewes' Kirsty Spice scored what proved to be the decisive goal.

She capitalised on an uncharacteristic Sheree Oliver mistake, made a jinking run into the penalty area and smashed the ball past Crook from the edge of the penalty area.

Welwyn did all they could to press for an equaliser but couldn't find one.
