FA Tesco Women's Premier League Cup Final - Preview
Arsenal Ladies v Doncaster Rovers Belles
THREE Welwyn Hatfield-based footballers will be gunning for glory in the FA Tesco Women's Premier League Cup Final tomorrow (Thursday), writes Mark Hemmings.
Arsenal Ladies will battle with Doncaster Rovers Belles at Scunthorpe United's Glanford Stadium in a bid to lift the cup for a 10th time.
The Gunners trio of Kelly Smith, Faye White and Alex Scott all live in Times Territory and will be hoping to return to Herts as cup final winners.
Central defender White is the team captain and the WHT caught up with her ahead of the big game. She is determined to get her hands on the trophy after suffering a 1-0 defeat in the final to Everton Ladies last term.
"Last year we didn't win it after losing to Everton; it takes longer to get over a loss as I don't like losing," said White.
The England international has already won the League Cup six times with the Gunners, and lifted it three times as captain.
"The first time in 2001 was special to lift it, now it is important to win it again.
"We travel up on the day. It's a bit further north than we'd like, but it's a neutral venue," she said.
Going into the first chance for silverware of the season, Arsenal Ladies are in good form.
"We beat Leeds (Carnegie) on Sunday in the quarter-final of the FA Cup, so that's a good result coming in the final," said White.
The Lady Gunners are also top of the Women's Premier League having won all 14 of their matches so far.
Tomorrow's opponents Doncaster are fourth in the table.
When the two met in the league back in September Arsenal ran out comfortable 6-1 winners.
The North London side will be looking for a similar result in the cup rematch.
For the final the Gunners will be without England international striker Karen Carney, who has signed for Chicago Red Stars.
Next month she will be joined by fellow Arsenal stars Kelly Smith and Alex Scott, who will join Boston Breakers.
Of those moves White said: "After March we will be losing a couple of players to the USA and that will affect us a little bit.
"We are aware of that, but we are still strong and have got enough players that will hopefully allow us to repeat the success we have had."
She added: "People have left in the past and we have shown we have good depth at Arsenal Football Club."
If you are planning to make the trip to Scunthorpe for the final to support the team, tickets are available.
They are priced at £5 for adults and £2.50 for children.
