WELWYN Garden City slumped to an extra-time loss in their FA Vase First Round Qualifying tie with Bedford at Herns Lane this afternoon (Saturday).

An encouraging first half display from the Citizens saw them create plenty of chances with Leigh Nymm, Piero Bagarone and Tommy Kiernan all going close.

It was Kiernan who put City ahead on 32 minutes with a low curled free-kick from the edge of the box after he had been pulled back when surging towards goal.

That was how the scoreline stayed at the break, but soon afterwards Bedford levelled.

With City starting the second period slowly, Ian Thorne crossed from the byline for the visitors to Kyle Watson who steered an effort into the bottom right corner past keeper Joe Croft on 50 minutes.

Both sides had opportunities to seal the clash in normal time, however neither could take them.

The match drifted into extra-time and it was Bedford who showed the greater desire to win the game.

The decisive goal came in the 105th minute.

Samuel Harwood slipped in substitute Sylvester Mulenga and he toe-poked it past the onrushing Croft and celebrated the winner with an impressive back-flip.
