Welwyn Garden City’s improved reserve side crashed out of the Herts Intermediate Cup in extra time after a nine-goal encounter went the way of Sun Sports Reserves 5-4.

The tie was re-arranged after their sides’ first meeting in the competition was abandoned due to fog 10 days earlier, with Sun Sports leading 4-1 at the time.

But the hosts were made to work for this second victory to advance to the next round.

WGC stormed into a two-goal lead through goals from Ade Osobu and Isaac Oppong but were soon pegged back to go into the break square at 2-2.

Sun Sports Reserves then took control of the tie, notching two quick goals to leave the Citizens on the backfoot, but the Herns Lane side were not beaten yet.

Osobu pulled a goal back and defender Dean Sadler forced the game into extra time as he headed in from a corner.

WGC had chances to win it in the extra period but were denied by determined home defending.

Having rode their luck, Sports found the final goal to send through to the next round.
