There have been plenty of big cat sightings around St Albans in recent months but Welwyn Garden City’s very own black panther was the hero of the day as the Citizens recorded a 3-1 win over Thame United.

It was the first success under the guidance of Dean Barker and came courtesy of two goals from new striker Eusebio Da Silva, who shares a name with the famous and gifted Portuguese superstar, the player who first owned the nickname in football.

Romelle Alomenu got the other goal, again his first for the club, as WGC fought back from the disappointment of conceding an early goal.

Barker, who has seen his side draw all of the previous four Southern League Division One Central games since taking over at Herns Lane, said: “It was a great win against a side in the play-offs.

“We were terrific from start to finish and are still unbeaten in the league since we took over.

“That win was for everyone that has supported the team since we joined the club.”

The last two matches have seen City battle to a point despite having a man sent-off.

They kept 11 men on the field this time but still had to do it the hard way after going behind to a Dan West effort on 21 minutes.

That only served to encourage WGC forward though and they were ahead a little more than 15 minutes later.

Da Silva swivelled excellently on a loose ball after Charlie Pattison had a shot blocked to make it 1-1 and then a long punt forward from Jay Rolfe found Alomenu and his flick went beyond Thame keeper Craig Hall.

There was almost a third just before the break as on-loan Barnet defender Ivan Agyaakwah met a Dave Keenleyside corner on the back post only to see Liam Tack clear it off the line.

They didn’t have too long to wait for a two-goal cushion though as Da Silva pounced again just two minutes after the restart, the striker getting on the end of Jesse Walklin’s cross with a bullet of a header.

From then on it was mostly a rampant WGC doing the attacking, although new keeper Chalie Jones, brought in from Barton Rovers as cover for Lewis Todd during his suspension, did have to make one smart save.

But Keenleyside and Matty Campbell-Mhlope both had chances as Barker’s side closed the game out in impressive style.
