WELWYN Garden City FC fell to their first defeat in seven league and cup games last night (Wednesday) with a 1-0 home loss to near-neighbours Harpenden Town.

Jimmy Hill scored the only goal of the Spartan South Midlands League Challenge Trophy game after 28 minutes at Herns Lane.

The Citizens were missing five first-team players through injury; Joe Brunt, Jerome Cain, Tony Gotobed, Tommy Kiernan and keeper Joe Croft the absentees.

But despite their absence, it was a tight game, which in the end went in the favour of Harpenden.

On Saturday, Simon Braine takes his Citizens side for a tough-looking encounter away at top-of-the-table London Colney.

The Blues are three points clear at the summit, with City in 11th spot.
