Welwyn Garden City FC have added the SSML Division One Cup to their league title to complete the double; a first in the club's history.
A stunning Sean Brettell free-kick on the stroke of half-time and a cool finish from leading scorer Joel Norris handed Adam Fisher’s Citizens a deserved 2-0 cup final victory over Crawley Green at Langford FC this evening (Tuesday).
The highlights of the opening half were few and far between.
A fine Joe Croft stop denied Green’s GB Deaf international Sam Halfpenny moments before the opening goal.
City won a free-kick just right of centre and left footer Brettell swept it up over the wall and into the top right hand corner of keeper Dean Bull’s goal right on 45 minutes.
The second half largely saw league champions WGC on top, although Green should have levelled.
Their best chance of the game came as Stuart Strange crossed for Sam Peverall and from in front of goal he side-footed wide.
It was a costly miss as WGC sealed the final win as Norris bustled his way through on the edge of the box, cut back, steadied himself and fired low past Bull on 86 minutes.
The final whistle was greeted with cheers from the travelling support from Herns Lane and that delight continued as they lifted the cup.
