CHAMPIONS Hatfield Town Reserves lost away to their Lemsford counterparts on Saturday in their penultimate game of the season.

Town clinched the Herts Senior County League Reserve Division One title the previous week and the game against Lemsford turned out to be very much an "after the Lord Mayor's Show" performance.

Hatfield made five changes from the team that beat Met Police Bushey a fortnight ago.

Matt Standen was away, Jack Evans injured and Steve Lengthorne, Martyn Wood and Steve O'Boy were rested on the bench.

Those absences gave opportunities for Liam Lawrence, Robbie Cavallari, Ryan Brandon, Ryan Smith and Jason Caswell to all start.

There was no hint of what was to come later in the game when Town took the lead 20 seconds into the match.

Following a long clearance, Ade Hammill burst through to finish convincingly making it 1-0 to Hatfield.

The visitors continued to put pressure on the Lemsford defence with a succession of corners and there were chances for Liam Lawrence, who shot narrowly wide of the keeper's left-hand post and for Hammill when he miscued in front of goal from a Rob Browell cross.

The swirling wind and incessant rain didn't help matters and it was Lemsford who played the better football and slowly took control of the match, despite their lowly league position.

Hatfield keeper Michael Vye had to be alert to make a good save to tip a shot round the post.

However, Vye was beaten in the 18th minute when Glenn Martin equalised for Lemsford with a header from a free-kick.

Town found themselves behind 10 minutes later when poor marking enabled Alex McDonald to break free and shoot across Vye to put the home side ahead at the break.

Liam Lawrence had a good shot saved by the Lemsford keeper early in the second half.

Lemsford went further ahead on the hour when Savas Calikisan made it 3-1 with a header from a corner.

Town sent on all three substitutes in a bid to snatch something from the game.

O'Boy shot past the post and Hammill put one over the bar before Darryn Stewart rifled in his 16th goal of the season five minutes from the end.

This proved to be no more than a consolation goal as Hatfield went down 3-2 for only their second league defeat of the season.

Hatfield Reserve team manager Gary Doctor wasn't happy.

"I was disappointed with our attitude and performance today," he said afterwards.

"It seemed like they wanted to win more than we did.

"I was hoping that we would end the season with just the one league defeat but we definitely took our foot off the gas for this game.

"We play our last game of the season away at Bovingdon on Saturday and we should be presented with the league trophy after the match, so I'm sure the lads will be up for it. It will be a special day for us.
