HATFIELD Town Youth breezed into the League Shield Final with a confident display in their 3-0 semi-final victory over Hertford Town Youth on Sunday.

Despite a nervy start, Hatfield soon began to put the Hertford defence under constant pressure.

However, the visitors proved a tough nut to crack and Hatfield were restricted to long-range efforts from Alex Edwards and James Upson.

The home side finally got the lead they deserved when Upson latched onto Tony Cleaver's lay-off to volley right-footed past the Hertford keeper.

Only minutes later left back Matt Johnson scored the goal of the season when his left-foot shot sailed over the stranded keeper from 35 yards.

Hertford hit back and twice went close just before the break, while at the other end Liam Daley saw his superb shot brilliantly tipped over by the goalkeeper.

The start of the second half saw a resurgent Hertford take the game to the hosts, but Hatfield's defence, superbly marshalled by Richard Albon and the outstanding Liam Daley, stood firm.

With full backs Alex Brown and Matt Johnson keeping a tight grip on the Hertford wingers, Hatfield began to dominate the game again.

Cleaver missed a great chance to increase the lead while Bruce Tahon saw his clever chip hit the crossbar.

It was the introduction of sub Tony Keast that finally killed off Hertford as he found space in the penalty area to rifle home Hatfield's third goal just minutes after coming on.

Hatfield then increased the pressure and Hertford had to defend vigorously to block a succession of shots from Edwards, Woolhead and Tahon to keep the score at 3-0.

Hatfield will now meet Ware Lions in Sunday's final at St Margaretsbury.
