AFC Hatfield showed signs of rust following a three-week lay-off as they fell to 3-0 home defeat to Cheshunt Reserves.

A double from Rio Brotherton and another from Aidan Richardson put the game to bed before half time as the hosts capitulated.

Hatfield showed signs of fight in the opening moments but soon found themselves behind as a left-wing cross evaded all but Richardson, who steered home with the faintest of touches.

Ten minutes before the break, their deficit worsened as Brotherton took advantage of more poor marking to poach his first.

A cruel deflection gifted Brotherton his second and Cheshunt’s third as the home side struggled to cope with the onslaught.

Hatfield picked up in the second period, but were denied on numerous occasions by in-form keeper Richard Platt as they rallied for a consolation.

Last season’s top scorer Stefan Saywell, absent all season due to a broken arm, almost opened his account on his return late on but his chip missed the target.
