STRIKER Matt Standen grabbed a brace as Hatfield Town Reserves overcame their Hinton counterparts 4-0 on Saturday.

League leaders Hatfield, who named an unchanged team for the third successive game, signalled their intentions in the second minute.

Captain Kev White came close as he flashed a shot narrowly wide from a corner.

Five minutes later, Town went one up.

A Joe Brandon free-kick from the right was finished neatly by Standen for his 26th Reserve team goal of the season.

There then followed a spell of sustained Hinton pressure.

Visiting keeper Steven Crisp was forced into making a good save down to his left and another from close range as Hinton started to come back into it.

However, the tide started to turn Hatfield's way after half an hour.

Several chances went begging in what was proving to be an open and entertaining first half.

Firstly, a neat through ball from Steve Lengthorn found Martyn Wood, whose attempted chip was saved by the Hinton custodian.

Further stops from the keeper kept out Standen and Darryn Stewart, while Adie Hammill shot narrowly wide.

The second half proved to be just as entertaining as the first but no longer as open.

Town went 2-0 up six minutes into the second period.

A Rob Browell cross from the left was netted from close range by Standen.

Keeper Crisp was called into action 10 minutes later when he managed to tip a rasping shot against the bar to keep Town in the game.

Jason Caswell came on as substitute for Hammill and had three chances in succession to increase Hatfield's lead.

The first was saved by the keeper, the second was an open goal that was squandered and the other was a header, again saved by the Hinton stopper.

Caswell made amends with 15 minutes remaining when an awful clearance from the keeper landed at his feet and he lobbed in from 25 yards out.

With five minutes to go, unselfish work from Caswell allowed Rob Browell to score from close range to make it 4-0 to Town.

With Met Police winning at Buntingford, Hatfield remain a point ahead of them in the league with a game in hand and four matches still to play.

Afterwards manager Gary Doctor said: "We could have had 12 goals today, but I'm happy with four and pleased to get the three points.

"But we've still got a couple of tough games left to play.
