Codicote have risen to 12th in Spartan South Midlands League Division One after an excellent 3-1 victory over previously fourth-placed Wodson Park at Gosling Stadium.

The visitors entered the game as favourites, boasting back-to-back league wins, while Cod had failed to take a point from their past three SSML games and it was Wodson who strove into a fourth minute lead. A poor clearance left the ball bobbling around just inside the box and Ryan Stevenson emphatically smashed home.

Seven minutes later, Codicote were level. James Taylor’s throw was worked into the box and Sam James prodded the ball past keeper Marco Tuzzeo.

From 1-0 down, Hendy Manning and Steve Young’s men steamed into a 2-1 advantage as Dave Iwediuno’s pace and good footwork bedazzled the Wodson backline and he expertly finished.

James’ superb second, a curling effort from the left-hand side of the box, in the 52nd minute completed a satisfying afternoon’s work for the Reds.

They are now three points clear of the Division One drop zone.

Meanwhile in SSML Premier Division, Welwyn Garden City twice went ahead at home to Stotfold but in the end had to settle for a point from a 2-2 draw at Herns Lane.

Ashley Kersey and Bobby Dance struck either side of a Ben L’Honore spot kick but the former Codicote striker hit a 74th minute equaliser to share the spoils.

WGC, now still looking for a first league win over Stotfold since 1975, remain sixth.

Hatfield Town are back in action at home to Risborough Rangers on Tuesday night. They hammered Brimsdown 5-1 last Thursday evening.
