HATFIELD Sports took another step to Chairman's Cup qualification with a 3-2 win against Hatfield Seniors yesterday.

The first half saw Division Three leaders Sports edge it on possession and chances and they took the lead midway through the period.

Keeper Danny Davies picked out Dan Hedges, who in turn found Perry Smith. He played the ball over the defence for Francis Mardlin, who took one touch before firing past the keeper.

Seniors came back into the Group C game and equalised after some sloppy defending saw Smith unable to sort his feet out and the ball went in off his foot.

Hatfield Seniors won a penalty towards the end of the half, but Davies saved brilliantly low to his left to leave the score 1-1 at half-time.

The second half went much the same as the first and Sports restored their lead when a goal kick fell to Smith, who flicked the ball through for Hedges to round the keeper and slot home.

It was 3-1 when Dan Smith broke onto a loose ball and surged forward.

He then played in Perry Smith on the edge of the box. Smith beat the last Seniors defender before coolly curling his shot around the goalkeeper.

Seniors got a second when a striker scored at the third attempt.

He twice collected the rebound from his own shots before finally finding the net.

The final 10 minutes were end to end with both sides having chances to score again, but Sports grabbed the points.
