Poor first-half Hatfield Town defending handed Risborough Rangers maximum points and inflicted the Blueboys’ first league defeat of the season.

Having thrashed Arlesey Town Reserves 5-0 and claim a creditable point at Chesham United Reserves, Hatfield took their eye off the ball quite literally as they gifted the home side three goals.

Ross Broadway, Dean Stenning and Sam Ward put Kev Pearman’s men to the sword in the opening 45 minutes.

Town came out fighting in the second half and quickly brought themselves right back into the game through Jimmy Cooke’s spot kick, after Tom Mardell had been tripped, and Charlie Payne’s rifled effort.

With eight minutes to go, Risborough were reduced to 10 men but Hatfield could not make the most of the man advantage although Cameron Leijgrave did hit the post in the dying seconds.

Hatfield host Broadfields United at the Gosling Stadium tomorrow night (Tuesday).
