Potters Bar Town came close to upsetting Southern League Division One Central leaders Kettering Town on their own patch on Saturday.

Jack Friend’s Bar had led the table-toppers 2-0 with goals from Josh Hutchinson, only for the Poppies to fight back and earn all three points.

Hutchinson opened the scoring on 25 minutes as James Ewington sped down the right and his fine cross was headed into the top left hand corner.

It was 2-0 just four minutes later as a poor clearance was played back in to Hutchinson on the left.

He drifted inside past two defenders and his 18 yard shot was deflected past keeper Jamie McAlindon off a defender’s leg.

Just before the break Kettering pulled a vital goal back when Andy Gooding’s free-kick was met by James Clifton’s header which was cleared off the line and Elliot Sandy swept home the loose ball.

The second half saw Kettering get back on level terms in the 64th minute with a penalty after Sandy was fouled by Tom Boxer.

Gooding fired home the spot-kick.

With the clock ticking it looked like Potters Bar would secure a point from their travels, however that was not to be the case.

Substitute Jon Bukasa’s cross from the left looped up under the bar and off balance Bar keeper Mike Rutherford could only help the ball into the net.
