NED Birss scored twice as Gosling Youth Under-13s were made to work hard for their 6-0 win over St John's Youth Gold.

Despite the final score on Sunday, this was a difficult game for Gosling Youth on a pitch that never allowed free-flowing football and against a side so short of players they utilised everyone as a defender.

The Mid Herts Rural Minors League match started with Gosling on the attack and stayed in the same vein throughout but as St John's packed their defence, chances were few and far between.

However, man of the match Birss broke the deadlock after a surging run from the back and a quality finish.

Top goalscorer Josh Eckley finished neatly shortly after for a 2-0 half-time lead which put the game beyond St John's.

Gosling went close a number of times in the second half before Birss claimed his second goal.

Martin Roberts scored a well-constructed goal for Gosling following a number of flowing passes.

Further strikes by Liam Catchpole and Jack Harper-Rilett gave the scoreline a more emphatic margin.

St John's, however, deserve great credit for the effort and commitment they put in, but Gosling were too strong for their weakened team.
