PROMOTION-chasing Lemsford were frustrated at the weekend by a dogged Croxley Guild side.

The village outfit went into their latest Herts Senior County League fixture in good form having lost just twice in 18 Division One matches, a run stretching back to last September.

It was back in September that Croxley beat Craig Attfield's side 2-0 as Lemsford continued their nightmare start to the season.

They won just one of their opening eight games.

Since then, however, the club's fortunes have been in stark contrast and Croxley found the much-changed Lemsford side a tougher proposition this time.

Just three players started for Lemsford from the team that were beaten that September day - captain Steve Cross, Danny Pickett and David Morris, as Attfield's new recruits continued their late charge for promotion.

They got off to a bright start on Saturday as well when Morris got to the ball ahead of the Croxley goalkeeper and crossed in from the byline.

The ball appeared to be landing on Chris Jones' head in front of an open goal, but a last-gasp header from a Croxley defender took the opportunity away from him.

Lemsford were then punished for some uncharacteristic bad defending from Peter Cross.

His header back to goalkeeper Russell Owen was intercepted by a Croxley forward, who accepted the gift and slotted past the Lemsford number one.

Before that, the home side had posed little threat to the Lemsford goal and the away team went on to push for the equaliser.

And within minutes they were level, Matt Harris sublimely volleying into the bottom corner.

Lemsford shot themselves in the foot again though, as they were caught on the break from their own corner to concede a second goal.

A Croxley Guild forward again raced through to slot past Owen once more.

However, the Welwyn Playing Fields side pushed for another equaliser and were yet again successful.

This time David Williams raced through from Cross' ball to lob the advancing Croxley keeper with a deft finish.

That levelled the score up at 2-2 at half-time, and gave Lemsford hope of grabbing the goals in the second half to go on and win the game.

Instead, the second period turned into a stalemate with neither side creating a decent scoring opportunity.

Chris Jones wasted Lemsford's only clear cut-chance when a square ball to Morris or Nick Roll was the better option.

Even the introduction of substitutes James Chang and Matt Jones failed to produce the magic Lemsford needed to go on and grab victory as the game ended 2-2 and the points were shared.

* Lemsford: Russell Owen, Peter Cross, Simon Chang, Steve Cross, Kevin Cory, David Morris, Danny Pickett, David Williams, Matthew Harris, Chris Jones, Nick Roll. Subs: James Chang, Glen Martin, Matt Jones.
