WELWYN Garden City FC have withdrawn their reserve side from the Spartan South Midlands League Reserve Division Two and entered the Herts Senior County League instead.

It is the first time in 40 years that the Citizens will have fielded a side in the County League.

Chairman Dick Dunning said the switch had been on geographical grounds and therefore, to some extent, also on economic grounds.

“The SSML Reserve Division Two this coming season was very largely Buckinghamshire based, with our second side facing trips to the likes of Stony Stratford, Princes Risborough, Old Bradwell etc, almost every second week,” said Dunning.

“By entering the County League - in their Senior Division One - all matches will be within the county, creating more exciting competition and much less travelling.

“The County League were pleased to receive the application, as indicated by the warm welcome to us on their website.”

WGC’s second string will have a host of local derbies to look forward to in the County League coming up against the likes of Panshanger, AFC Hatfield, Kimpton Rovers.
