Welwyn Garden City are now two wins from guaranteed Spartan South Midlands League Division One promotion after a 4-1 victory over London Lions at Herns Lane on Wednesday night (April 8).
It took WGC until beyond the half-hour mark to find a way through the staunch Lions’ backline. Sam James picked the ball up 25 yards and unleashed a low shot that crept under Mario Cenolli’s body and into the net.
Not to be over-awed. the visitors refused to lie down and deservedly levelled on the stroke of half-time through Charlie Kasler.
Having failed to break down in the opening stages of the first half, the Citizens struggled to reclaim the lead early in the second. That was until Jason Caswell emerged off the substitutes’ bench to win a penalty, hauled down by keeper Cenolli. Top scorer Joel Norris, who slammed home a cracking 20-yard strike to salvage some pride last Saturday at rivals Hatfield Town, could not convert from the mandatory 12 as Cenolli atoned for conceding the spot kick, diving full-length to save.
Moments later, WGC finally got the second. Picking up the ball 30 yards out, Caswell ran on and for the second time in the evening, Cenolli allowed a shot to creep under his body and squirm in.
It was three 13 minutes from the end, Sean Brettell, who faced a race against time to get back from Newcastle for the game, dipped a volley into the net.
Norris finally got his goal two minutes from the end to complete the victory.
