WELWYN Garden City Ladies opened up their league programme with a resounding 5-2 win away to Norwich City Ladies.
The Lady Citizens started out slowly which allowed Norwich to dominate the opening 25 minutes, during which they took a 1-0 lead after eight minutes.
However, the visitors soon got into their stride and good work from Faye Rees set up Naomi Lyon for an equaliser in the 25th minute.
Rees then beat the offside trap and the attentions of the tall and pacey Norwich centre-half after 32 minutes to run thirty yards and coolly slot the ball past the Norwich keeper.
The Lady Citizens came out for the second half with determination and took the lead again in the 51st minute when Betts struck a free-kick from the edge of the penalty area into the bottom left hand corner of the net.
Lyon grabbed her second of the match in the 70th minute after yet more good work from Rees.
New signing Sophie Piotrowska capped a fine second half performance with a strike from 12 yards after 75 minutes following a goalmouth scramble - which included a strong claim for a penalty for handball.
Welwyn Coach Steve Chivers said after the game: "This is a great start to the season. Our strikers Naomi Lyon and Faye Rees were outstanding.
"Our captain, Sheree Oliver was superb in defence against a very quick Norwich City attack.
"We dominated the second half and could have scored more but we're happy to settle for five.
"Most important of all, it was a great team performance, carrying on from where we left off last season."
Welwyn Garden City Ladies are back in action at home to Northampton Town Ladies on Sunday at Herns Lane, Panshanger, kick-off 2:00pm.
