WELWYN Garden City Ladies brushed aside Royston Town 7-0 on Sunday in the quarter-finals of the Herts Cup.

The Lady Citizens have now taken their goals total to 17 in two matches after the hammering at a windswept Moneyhole Playing Fields.

Sophie Thompson got the ball rolling in only the third minute when she chipped the Royston keeper to make it 1-0.

A superb goal from Faye Rees, playing in an unaccustomed midfield role, doubled the advantage, and Naomi Lyon made it 3-0 with a 25-yard effort after 28 minutes.

The second half saw the home side run riot, with further goals coming from Samantha Gillings (2) and Laveena Betts, which took the score to 6-0 after 73 minutes.

Soon after, Jody Lapish added more gloss to the scoreline with a seventh.

Gillings, who bossed the midfield throughout, was denied her hat-trick on 77 minutes when the keeper dived full length to turn her shot around the post.

From the resultant corner, Betts hit the bar with a header.

Just after, the visitors did the same again from a corner.

WGC will face London Colney in the semi-final, and take on Bedford Town Belles away this Saturday in the league.
