GOALKEEPER Gary Statham has joined Codicote from London Colney ahead of the new season.

The experienced stopper has signalled his intent to do his bit in helping the club, managed by Dan Kennoy, progress.

Statham said: "Dan (Kennoy) spoke to me over the summer and explained that the club were looking to move forward.

"I hope I can help them do that. I've played with and against a few of the lads already here so I know what we can expect to achieve this season.

"I'm looking forward to the challenge."

Kennoy has also signed former Hatfield Town winger Daryl Smith, along with ex-Arlesey Town defender Patrick Alcide.

Of his new players, Kennoy said: "We've made some great signings in time for the start of the season.

"Patrick and Gary will give us some experience and organisation in the back line.

"And I know enough about Daryl that he'll terrorise defences with his pace."

With the league season beginning on Saturday, Kennoy is not being drawn on his expectations for the term ahead.

He said: "It's been mentioned from several corners of the local football scene that we're one of the favourites to go up.

"Personally I never go into a season looking any further ahead than the first game.

"We start with two home league games, although it'll be like playing at a neutral ground as we haven't had the opportunity to play any games at Hertingfordbury Park.

"If we don't get off to a good start those same people will be saying we're favourites to go down."

Codicote play Standon & Puckeridge on Saturday.

This is followed by an encounter with Wormley Rovers on Wednesday.
