The fan favourite takes over the struggling Blue Boys, with their 2-0 defeat at FC Broxbourne Borough on Saturday leaving them marooned at the foot of Spartan South Midlands League Division One.

But chairman Chris Maloney is confident the appointment can help propel the club up the division.

He said: “We wanted to get the decision right. The club is going through an important period right now and it was right to bring in a man with the desire and ambition of Jason Beck, but also a connection with the club, the town and the community”.

Beck has had plenty of success in the SSML over the years with spells at Hertford Town, Royston TOwn and AFC Dunstable as well as his home town club, with whom he won the Herts Senior County League Premier Division title.

His first game in charge is at the club’s temporary home of Cotlandswick, London Colney, on Saturday against Ampthill Town.

The Blue Boys are also on the lookout for new players.

Maloney said: “It’s never too late to join our team, with new players that joined us in the last few weeks already pushing for spots in the matchday squads.

“We are always looking for new players, if you think you could improve either our first team or reserves please contact the U25s manager Chris Maloney on 07795 276 060.”

Elsewhere in the division, Codicote are now just one place above Hatfield after slipping to a 3-1 defeat against Buckingham Town at the John Clements Sports & Community Centre.

Charlie Thake got their only goal.

They are back in action tonight (Tuesday) when they host Harefield United and they are back at home against Langford on Saturday.
