HATFIELD Town started the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division football season in disastrous fashion as they were hammered 6-1 at home to Oxhey Jets last night (Tuesday).

New boss Mike Hollister has always said it will take time to gel a new-look side together, but even he wouldn’t have predicted such a comprehensive defeat in the league opener.

Hatfield actually took the lead after 20 minutes when Jay Rolfe netted, but from their on in, things went from bad to worse.

Darren Butler squared things up almost immediately, and at half-time it was 3-1 to the Jets with Lewis Putnam and Lee Inch scoring.

A Luke Beardsworth double and a Chris Ingham strike took the visitors’ tally to six and that’s how it finished as The Blueboys slumped to a disappointing defeat at The Gosling Stadium.
