WELWYN St Mary's FC were runners-up in the National Christian Trophy final held at Rushden & Diamonds' Nene Park Stadium.

The team, managed by Stephen Veasey and his assistant Brian Rogers, were beaten 3-1 by St Peters Everton earlier this month.

The Merseysiders went 3-0 ahead in the game before Tom Irving netted a consolation goal for the Hertfordshire side.

St Mary's had fought their way through five rounds to make the finale of the national Christian competition.

After a first round bye, they defeated Cheltenham's Cambray FC 4-0 away, then in the third round knocked out Liverpool's Stanley Park 5-4 after extra time to make the quarter-finals.

There they defeated Duke St Richmond from Surrey 3-2 before a narrow 1-0 victory over Cheshire's Toft Tornadoes in the semis.
