Ryan Gordon, back at Herns Lane after a couple of seasons working abroad, hit a goal at the start of each half in Welwyn Garden City Reserves' 3-2 SSML Reserve Division South & East win over Harpenden's second string.

The former WGC skipper and midfielder has played in the Citizens’ reserves last half-dozen games, his good form is such that reserve boss Neil Draper feels it won’t be long before Gordon is pushing for a first-team spot.

WGC began this game in good shape and newcomer John Bliss drove a well struck 20 yarder just wide before they took the lead in four minutes.

A Paul Taylor free-kick found the head of Stuart McDermott, Harpenden keeper Thorpe allowed the effort to strike his chest and run away from him and Gordon shot into an empty net.

Moments later Carl Costain drove an effort against keeper Thorpe and on 16 minutes, Marc Arnott, brother of first-teamer Craig, was put completely clear, but fired against the keeper’s legs.

Towards the interval Harpenden improved and got on terms just past the half-hour when a run and cross from the right took out WGC keeper Freddie Hester and Harpenden’s Ben Warren rolled the equaliser into an empty net.

Five minutes after the restart, WGC restored their lead.

First team regular Daryl Smith, having a run-out after a recent ankle operation, made a strong run down the left and from his low cross Gordon came in again to turn his second past keeper Thorpe.

Warren put a great chance of levelling again almost immediately wide from a couple of yards, before WGC’s Mark Draper hit a defender with the goal gaping at the other end.

Harpenden made it 2-2 with a fine individual goal from substitute Will Bates, who pulled down a high ball, tricked both Costain and fellow defender Matt McArdle and rolled it past Hester for the equaliser.

The winner came five minutes from the end.

Bradley Jenner attacked down the right, he found Draper who cut in and despatched a well struck effort into the bottom corner to take the points.

WGC Res: Hester, Jenner, McArdle, Costain, Taylor, McDermott (Cockram 75), Bliss, Gordon (Kiddie 63), Smith (Studholme 65), Draper, Arnott (M).
