SHERRARDSWOOD Ladies secured silverware in the Herts and Beds Cup Final after a nail-biting penalty shoot-out victory over Leverstock Green.
Jo Meakins was the hero who held her nerve to fire in the winning spot-kick after Sherrardswood keeper Paula Collis had saved two Leverstock penalties.
The shoot-out was the only way to separate the two sides after 120 minutes of goalless action on Sunday.
And it proved to be a success for the Welwyn team as they went on to win 3-2.
Sherrardswood went into this game as underdogs and had to contend with a Leverstock striker who had scored 39 goals this season.
That job of marking her was down to captain Kristie Donovan.
Both teams were starting to feel the heat and Hemel outfit Green kept piling the pressure on the Sherrardswood defence, but defenders Jo Meakins and Kristie Donovan held solid.
Once again some fantastic saves by keeper Collis kept Sherrardswood in the game to go in at half-time 0-0.
The second period was an even affair.
Leverstock were making their trademark breaks forward fast in numbers, but the Sherrardswood defence remained solid.
At the end of 90 minutes the match was still deadlocked at 0-0 and so the game went into extra time.
And when this failed to separate the sides, penalties were on the agenda.
With tired legs, the five brave penalty takers to volunteer were Sue Hart, Katy Jones, Emily Davey, Jules Comerford and Jo Meakins.
Leverstock scored first, and then Sherrardswood missed to put their opponents 1-0 up.
Keeper Collis saved the second Green penalty, but her side missed their next spot-kick.
Leverstock then netted again to take a 2-0 lead.
Sherrardswood slotted home their third kick, then Leverstock hit their next over the bar, taking the score to 2-1 to Green.
The Sherrardswood supporters were really getting behind their team now and they scored their fourth kick, taking the shoot-out right to the wire.
Keeper Paula Collis dived the right way to save the next kick, leaving Jo Meakins to step up and fire the ball down the middle to secure a deserved 3-2 victory on penalties for her team.
Delighted club founders Melissa Wright and Katie Baron spoke of their delight after the match.
They said: "We could not have imagined that three years ago when the team entered the League we would have secured fourth in the league and win the Herts & Beds Cup Final in the same year.
"It's been a truly remarkable story for a truly remarkable team.
